A Sweet Experience: Touring The Havanna Chocolate Museum and Factory in Bariloche

February 3, 2025. Havanna Chocolate Factory. Bariloche, Argentina.

Now, we know a visit to Bariloche wouldn’t be complete without stopping by the Havanna Chocolate Museum. We had driven past it many times, assuming it was just a tourist trap and had avoided it. After all, what else is there to know about chocolate?

Still, we decided to give it a try, and while it wasn’t a life-changing experience, we have to admit—we learned a lot and had a great time.

The tour began with a thorough explanation of how the cacao fruit grows on the trunk of the cacao tree, how it is harvested, fermented, roasted, ground, and further processed into the delicacy we all love. We also learned about its history—how the Mayans discovered and consumed it, how the Aztecs used it as currency, and how the Spanish conquistadors eventually brought it to Europe.

Spoiler alert: Midway through the tour, they served us hot, thick chocolate—a delicious treat!

The tour then shifted to modern chocolate production and the history of the Havanna company. We walked on a catwalk above factory workers performing various tasks, such as mixing, pouring, and packaging.

At the end of the tour, they informed us that we could use our $4 entry tickets as credits toward purchases at their store. Naturally, we headed straight there and felt like kids in a candy store—literally! We ended up buying about $60 worth of chocolate treats and applied our entrance credit.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience and a great way to spend a few hours. We highly recommend visiting the Havanna Chocolate Museum in Bariloche!
