Sendero Laguna La Zeta: A Hike Opportunity Near Esquel, Argentina

February 5, 2025. Sendero Laguna La Zeta. Esquel, Argentina.

Today, we hiked the Sendero Laguna La Zeta. Laguna La Zeta is a small lake just northwest of Esquel. It was an overcast day with high winds, so we decided a short, nearby hike was the best option. The hike was 3.8 miles with a total ascent of 635 feet.

The hike begins in a beautiful meadow where five wild mares tended to their colts, while two stallions stood guard at a distance. We continued on to the valley of “Los Dos Mates,” named after the replicas of mate tea cups and straws found there. From that point, the ascent begins through a dense pine forest, culminating in a view of Cerro La Torta, where ice tunnels are reportedly accessible for hiking.

Sadly, at the very top, we came across the carcass of a young horse that had recently perished.

The return was just as beautiful, and with the sun peeking through the clouds, we enjoyed clear views of Cerro Colorado and Cerro Nahuel Pan. As we made our way back, we noticed Cafetería Parador, near the lake shore, was opening its doors, offering a great variety of lunch items and drinks.

The Laguna La Zeta area appears to be a favorite among local mountain bikers, hikers, and beachgoers, with well-appointed facilities for those who wish to swim in the lake. When visiting Esquel, this hike is a convenient and rewarding option for hikers and nature lovers.
