April 16, 2025. Little River, South Carolina.
Today we returned to the Valley at Eastpoint Golf Club in Little River, South Carolina. It was a pleasant return, as we had played the course while living aboard our sailboat and transiting the nearby Intracoastal Waterway.
On October 2023, we docked at the nearby Myrtle Beach Yacht Club. On that occasion, the golf club attendant, Harold, had taken our clubs and stored them for us at the pro shop so we would not have to carry them back and forth to the boat. Today, the first face we saw in the parking lot of the course was Harold’s. He didn’t remember much, but we reminisced about our prior stay, how he had stored our clubs, and the round he played with us. Harold has struggled with medical conditions since then and wasn’t up to playing today, but it gave us great joy to see him.
The Valley course at Eastpoint Golf Club doesn’t seem difficult on paper, but we managed to play our worst golf of the week. The conditions were fair, with some of the greens in desperate need of repair, but overall we simply did not strike the ball well. I, for one, did not humble myself to the white tees, and the blue tees forced impossible second shots that resulted in an overall score of 104. Why I make a difficult game more difficult by playing from the back tees defies logical explanation.
Overall, we had a wonderful day with perfect weather and the course to ourselves. We will certainly return to this course as soon as we forget the scores we recorded today.
