Exploring Sandusky, Ohio: History and Fun in the Rain

May 22, 2025. Sandusky, Ohio. Day 1 of 170.

Day one of our road trip brought us rain—lots of rain. We drove approximately 400 miles through Maryland, Pennsylvania, and a great part of Ohio, all in the rain. Despite the weather, we made excellent progress and arrived in the historic city of Sandusky, Ohio, by 2 p.m.

Sandusky, a city of 25,000 people on the shores of Lake Erie, was founded in the early 1800s. Although we didn’t stroll due to the rain, a drive through downtown provided ample evidence of the city’s rich history.

The main tourist attraction in Sandusky is the Cedar Point Amusement Park, which, from the outside, appears to house some of the scariest rollercoaster rides we’ve ever seen. There are also two very large indoor waterparks: the Kalahari Resort and Conference Center and the Great Wolf Lodge. Additionally, there seem to be many family attractions, such as mini-golf and go-kart racing.

We ended our night with dinner at the local Outback Steakhouse and turned in early to prepare for tomorrow’s drive. Next stop: Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
