Warm and Sunny Beach Day: In Idaho?

June 13, 2025. Sandpoint, Idaho. Day 23 of 170

This was an unexpected gift: a beach day in Idaho! We had dipped our toes in the water yesterday but hadn’t quite built up the courage to swim in the lake. Today would be a different story.

The City Beach Park at Sandpoint is a hotspot for water activities. Boaters launch their vessels, sailors hoist their sails, and walkers and bikers pass by. There’s also a playground, a basketball court, among many other amenities. But even with all the activity, the main attraction—the beach itself—remains surprisingly quiet, offering plenty of room on the sand to soak up the sun. City Beach boasts ample parking, clean bathrooms, and showers to rinse off after a swim or a walk on the sand. This is truly an outdoor oasis for families and kids.

We found our spot on the sand and were quickly in the water. The water was cold—not “cold plunging” cold, but cold enough to make you catch your breath after you dive in. After a few minutes, you become accustomed to it, and a short swim certainly helps. The main water attraction is the logs. We swam to them and attempted to sit and roll off. While standing or diving is prohibited, we saw plenty of teenagers fully engaged in log-rolling battles that ultimately ended with one or both contestants tumbling off. The water was crystal clear, and the sun shone brightly the entire day.

If you come to Sandpoint, Idaho, bring a bathing suit. A swim in Lake Pend Oreille, the largest lake in Idaho, is not to be missed. We had such a good time that we plan to return on Sunday after church.
