Hiking the Owyhigh Lakes Trail, a Must-Do Near Mount Rainier

June 21, 2025. Packwood, Washington. Day 31 of 170

Today, Mount Rainier was covered in snow, with five inches reported, and likely more at higher elevations. The conditions were severe enough that upon our arrival at the park, we found it closed. We continued north on State Route 123, which borders the park on its east side without entering its perimeter. Just a few miles north of the Stevens Canyon Southeast entrance, there are two trails to the right: Shriner Peak Lookout Trail and Owyhigh Lakes Trail. We opted for the less challenging Owyhigh Lakes Trail.

It was raining lightly as we began our hike, a continuation of the weather over the past 48 hours. The trail immediately descended approximately 400 feet, and with little effort, we were amidst beautiful waterfalls. The trees, much like those on the East Trail a couple of days ago, are ancient giants, compelling you to gaze up at their perfectly straight trunks. This hike immerses you in a lush temperate forest, with the greenest and thickest vegetation we have ever seen surrounding us.

The trail to the lakes extends about 4.5 miles, but by the time we reached 1.5 miles, the rain had intensified, and we heard reports of snow ahead from other hikers. We decided to return to the car, grateful for what we had experienced. This is a must-do hike, even though it’s just outside the park, which is the area’s main attraction. There is parking on the south and east side of the road, approximately 300 feet from the trail entrance. We have found few hikes that offer such beauty so quickly and with so little effort. We encourage you to add it to your list of hikes when visiting Mount Rainier, but be sure to check snow conditions before you go.
