July 19, 2025. Bremerton, Washington. Day 59 of 170
Today, we embarked on a day trip to Bremerton, Washington. Bremerton, the largest city on the Kitsap Peninsula, is nestled along the scenic Puget Sound. It’s renowned as the home of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Puget Sound Naval Museum. The shipyard, a National Historic Landmark since 1992, has played a critical role in naval construction and maintenance for over 100 years. If you’re interested in naval history, Bremerton has much to offer.
Admission to the Puget Sound Naval Museum is free, providing fascinating insight into the shipyard’s history and the lives of sailors aboard aircraft carriers. Just past the Bremerton Ferry dock lies the USS Turner Joy Destroyer, credited with firing the first and last shots in the Vietnam War. You can tour this historic Destroyer; tickets are $22 for adults and $15 for children.
Bremerton itself is a charming shore town. After our museum visit, we relaxed at Harborside Fountain Park. This tranquil area features water elements designed by the same architect and company responsible for the famous Bellagio Casino fountains in Las Vegas.
After exploring Bremerton, we drove to Port Orchard for a wonderful meal at a local Mexican restaurant. The entire Kitsap Peninsula is a region of immense natural beauty, boasting numerous parks with access to the Puget Sound. It makes for an excellent day trip from Seattle or Tacoma.
