A Cold Veterans Day Golf Outing at East Potomac Links

November 11, 2025. Washington, DC.

What a privilege to spend Veterans Day playing golf at the heart of our Nation’s Capital.

East Potomac Golf Links, situated in East Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., has a rich history. To think of all the history on that course—it opened on March 15, 1921, with then-President Warren G. Harding among its early golfers. It remains a pillar of accessible public golf, offering iconic views of the city’s monuments and the ever-busy Ronald Reagan Airport.

Because of its geography—a peninsula surrounded by the waters of the Potomac River—a cold, windy day is certainly the worst time to play golf. Despite a temperature of 33 degrees Fahrenheit and gusting winds of over 30 miles per hour, we decided to bundle up in layers and go play.

We were joined by our son and his friend, Jack. They were both an absolute joy to play with. Instead of complaining about the cold or the way all the extra clothing prevented a proper swing, they took the game and themselves lightly, smiling throughout our battle with the bitter cold.

By the time we reached the 18th hole, we were chilled to the bone and in need of a warm drink to soothe us. We were proud to have endured such a cold day of golf. Would I do it again? In the same company, I surely would.
