October 22, 2025. Jeffersonton, Virginia.
It was difficult to find an affordable golf course with available tee times near Washington, D.C. today. In fact, most tee times were booked. Could it be that the government shutdown is crowding the area’s golf courses? With hundreds of federal workers off the clock, there must be a sudden surge of golf enthusiasts trying to spend their unplanned time off somewhere. It seems the only thing getting done in Washington today is a smooth lag putt!

We decided to play golf in the country, and boy, were we rewarded! Just 30 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., lies a beautiful golf course at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. South Wales Golf Course in the small town of Jeffersonton, Virginia, is a hidden treasure for golfers.

We arrived at 9:30 AM and were quickly sent off into the most serene golf setting we have ever experienced. Immediately surrounded by a cornucopia of fall colors, we took on what was a challenging but fair course. The weather conditions were perfect, and the course is in good shape even though the greens could use a little repair.

We had a wonderful experience and certainly will play it again. It was a joy to get away from all the city noise and just relax in the quiet atmosphere of South Wales Golf Course. We encourage anyone in the D.C. area to venture out and give South Wales a try—it is a golfing paradise!
